Cross-country
Cross-country running in the winter months is very popular at St.Mewan, with up to 30 children competing on a regular basis. Following school races for Years 4, 5 & 6, a team is selected to run in 8 events: the termly Restormel Primary School Cross-Country Championships held at Penrice and the monthly lunchtime races at Par. The season culminates with the very best runners being selected for the Cornwall Primary Schools Cross-Country Championships in March. The most recent St.Mewan County Champion was the outstanding Year 6 girl, Jessica Hicks in 2003, who was unbeaten over 10 Primary School races.
Football There is a strong reputation for football at St.Mewan, with a history of success in recent years, at local and county level. After-school clubs are offered for all children in Years 5 and 6, with two practices a week, plus numerous matches against other St.Austell schools. Up to 40 children attend on a regular basis, enjoying their football and hoping to gain selection for a school team. The school A and B Teams play in the St.Austell & District League, plus two
Lunchtime football clubs are also available for Year 3 and Year 4 children, once a week during the Autumn and Spring Terms, weather permitting! The best of these children are selected for occasional 7-a-side matches against other local schools.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics is taught as part of the school curriculum. The hall is well-equipped with gymnastic equipment, plus 20 mats and a climbing frame installed in 1998.

Netball |

St. Mewan has a reputation for coaching strong, skilful netball teams and this year in no exception. Currently defending a 100% record in the St. Austell and District league, the A Team are chasing a third successive league title. Training takes place on Tuesdays for Year 6 and Thursdays for Year 5, with league fixtures most weeks and friendlies at other times. We are always willing to play friendlies against other schools outside the St. Austell area and would be grateful for any offers.

Swimming
Swimming is taught in Key Stage 2 only, with 8 or 9 sessions for each class in every year. The class is split into three groups, depending on their ability and taught for half an hour each session. This is held at Polkyth Recreation Centre from which a team is selected to represent the school in the St.Austell & District Swimming Gala, traditionally held in June. Out of ten schools competing, our best finishing positions were runners-up in 2002 and in third 2003. Tag Rugby
Since 1999, a non-contact version of rugby is played at St.Mewan for boys & girls in Year 6, with after-school practices and occasional matches against local schools. There is a St.Austell & District Tag-Rugby Tournament held at Poltair, followed by a Restormel Tournament and finally, if we qualify, the Cornwall Youth Games held in Newquay. Our most successful year was in 2003, when the excellent St.Mewan squad went through the season unbeaten in 18 matches but, after a draw with the Caradon team, ended up as County runners-up. The team has also played a mini-match during half-time at a Pirates match.
